"The Church of St Peter retains an 11th century west tower and a Norman font.

It appears to have had a number of rebuilding stages and was partly rebuilt in brick in 1850.

A fragment of stone cross dating to c.850-900 has been found embedded in the tower arch.

Excavations in 1973 and 1975 showed the remains of an earlier, rectangular, late Saxon church underlying the current structure"

Kelly's Directory 1930 reports :-

"The church of St. Peter is a small edifice of stone and brick, consisting of chancel and nave and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells:

the tower, chancel and nave arch are of Saxon or very early Norman date:

the church was repaired and partly rebuilt in 1850 by William Hay esq. and was restored and repaired in 1868, at a cost of £220, raised by subscription:

there are 90 sittings"

White's Directory 1872 notes :-

"The Church (St. Peter), is a small edifice of brick and stone, consisting of nave, chancel, and square western tower with three bells.

It contains about 120 sittings, and was partly rebuilt, in 1850, at the expense of "William Hay, Esq., and restored and repewed in 1868, at a cost of £220, raised by subscription.

The benefice is a vicarage, valued in K.B. at £4. 8s. 4d., and now at £132, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. Norris Cogswell, M.A., who has 93 acres of glebe here, and is also vicar of Immingham, but resides at Great Grimsby"

Stone on the north side of the church near a modern extension. The plaque reads :-  

"THIS, GLACIAL STONE IS THOUGHT TO BE THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND YET FOUND IN HOLTON LE CLAY AND WAS SET UP ON THIS SITE TO COMMEMORATE THE COMPLETION OF AN EXTENSION TO THE CHURCH DURING JUNE 1991"

"Near to the remains of the standing cross can be found the village war memorial, paid for by public subscription and unveiled in 1919.

This is a marble square pillar standing on a concrete base. Featured at the top of the pillar is a decorative marble urn which is half-covered with marble carved to resemble flowing cloth.

On the pillar in lead lettering are the names of the six men of the village who died during World War I.

Names of the four locals who died in World War II were added after that conflict"
